Mr. S. Mohammed Azaad
LL.M in Corporate and Commercial Laws, UGC - NET, M.B.L, B.C.A
Mr. S. Mohammed Azaad is serving as an Assistant Professor of Law at the Tamil Nadu
National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli since 2015. Previously, he was teaching at
School of Law, VELS University, Chennai for a brief period. He graduated from Dr. Ambedkar
Government Law College, Chennai. During his college days, he interned under Senior Advocate
Mr. M.S. Krishnan for more than 2 years. He also served as a Law Clerk to Justice S. Rajeswaran
and Justice R.S. Ramanathan at the Madras High Court. Before taking up academia, he practiced
as an Advocate at the Office of the Madras High Court Government Pleader, Mr. S.T.S. Murthi.
He completed his LL.M from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad specializing in
Corporate and Commercial Laws. Subsequently, he cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET)
conducted by UGC in 2015. He also holds Master of Business Laws (M.B.L) and B.C.A. degrees
from NLSIU, Bangalore and TNOU, Chennai respectively. At TNNLU, he has handled varied
subjects like Competition Law, Election Laws, Laws on Securities, Banking Laws, Law of Torts,
Property Laws, Judicial Process & Interpretation of Statutes at the UG level and Law of
Securities & Derivatives Contracts and Corporate Law & Corporate Governance at the PG level.
He has a keen research interest in areas on Intersection between Competition Law and Labour
Laws, Laws on Refugees and Laws Relating to Protection of Trade Secrets in India.
Mr. Azaad is the Coordinator and one of the founding members of the Centre for
Competition Law (CCL). TNNLU is accredited as an Empanelled Institution (EI) by the
Competition Commission of India (CCI), New Delhi in 2017. CCL has collaborated with CCI
regularly for Competition Assessment (CA) of economic policies/legislations. In 2018, he
submitted a CA report to the CCI on the Indian Textile Sector with Special Reference to
National Textile Policy, 2000. Currently, he is working on a CA report on Marketing and
Distribution of Coal in India. In addition to academic activities, he is currently discharging
functions as the Faculty in Charge of the Internship & Placement Committee and Translation
Club at TNNLU. As a Chief Editor, he was responsible for bringing out the first edition of the
TNNLU Law Review (TNNLU-LR). He was also a former Member of the Internal Complaints
Committee (ICC) and former Faculty in Charge of the Moot Court Committee (MCC) and
Debate Committee at TNNLU.
Mr. Azaad was a Visiting Fellow at the Melbourne Law School (MLS), University of
Melbourne under the Indian Equality Law Fellowship Programme in 2019. At MLS, he
researched on a project relating to how India’s treatment of certain refugee population is
violating International and Indian laws on Anti-Discrimination under the guidance of Prof.
Tarunabh Khaitan from Oxford University. He is also a Visiting Professor at the National
Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, wherein he teaches M.B.A. students courses on
Legal Aspects of Business and Labour Laws. He has served as a Resource Person for many
Conferences and Workshops organised by reputed institutions like CUSAT, Pondicherry
University etc. He has competed in several National & International Moot Court Competitions
such as the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot and Willem C. Vis International Arbitration
Moot at Vienna, Austria. Besides drafting many Moot Propositions on varied themes of law, he
is also regularly invited as a Judge for Moot Competitions all over India.
