About The Event

The Centre for Studies in Environmental and Natural Resources Laws, Tamil Nadu National Law University organised a webinar as part of the Suthanthira Thirunaal Amudha Peruvizha (STAP) initiative.

The event began with providing a detailed background of the Resource Person Hon’ble Justice Dr. P. Jyothimani, Former Judge, Madras High Court and Former Judicial Member, Southern Region, Chennai by Dr. Amirthalingam. S, Faculty-in- Charge of the Centre.

The discussion took place in two parts, with a comprehensive presentation by the resource person for 30-40 minutes followed by questions from the audience. Hon’ble Justice Dr. P. Jyothimani discussed the parallel developments on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in International Environmental law and the Parliament legislating on key aspects of the environment through the Water Act, 1974; The Air Act, 1981 and Environment Protection Act, 1986 etc. He explicated the development of the ‘Public Trust Doctrine’, ‘Precautionary Principle’ and ‘Polluters Pay Principles’ that are quintessential to environmental litigation in India. Further, he noted the uneven planes of development and environmental protection and, placed emphasis on the concept of Sustainable Development as the heart and soul of further action. One of the key takeaways from this webinar was the emphasis on individual efforts and concerted/collectivized action that is required to reach environmental goals. Hon’ble Justice also specifically noted that enforcement of environmental law and judicial rulings of the courts or the National Green Tribunal is an area that is rife with issues that need immediate attention. To conclude the event, vote of thanks also was delivered by Dr. Amirthalingam. The event was a huge success, eliciting good number of participants including the Vice Chancellor, faculty members, students and alumni of TNNLU.

After the interesting presentation, the floor was open for questions and answers.

Hon’ble Justice answered all the questions raised by the participants patiently.
